Wakeman Boys & Girls Travel Teams

CANDIDATES MUST BE WAKEMAN MEMBERS FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR PRIOR TO TRYING OUT FOR TEAM.

We are assembling the team to give our loyal members in 7th & 8th grade a chance to experience something more in terms of basketball and cultural enrichment. Our clubhouse has much to offer besides just basketball and we are looking to enhance the opportunities of the young men and women who are not only playing basketball here, but interacting with our staff on a regular basis and taking advantage of the many other programs we offer. There will be a short parents meeting prior to the try-outs in October and we ask that at least one parent be present for this meeting. There will be many factors considered when determining the 12 players selected for this opportunity. Ability will be a factor, but certainly not the only factor in deciding who is going to represent Wakeman Boys and Girls Club.

Attention All Volunteer Coaches

Wakeman requires all coaches to attend a mandatory coaching certification program. The program will follow the guidelines of the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), a nationally recognized youth sport-coaching curriculum. It will include a 2-hour workshop covering a discussion of coaching responsibilities, planning techniques and legal obligations.

* All volunteers that are interested in coaching in our basketball or lacrosse programs (3rd–8th grade) are required to attend a session prior to the start of the season.

EXCEPTION: Volunteers that attended a class before September 2004 will need to retake the class. Those who have taken it after September 2004 do not need to retake it. ASEP has restructured the content of the course; the games first approach vs. Teaching using skills-drills ending with a scrimmage is a fresh outlook that makes the players & coaches enjoy coaching while their players are learning & having fun.

Coaches that attend will be added to the volunteer list & will be considered based on availability and need on an individual basis each season.

Attending the course does not guarantee you will be slotted as a coach.

Attendees will be given the latest edition of the “Coaching Youth Basketball” book that is loaded with games to play, practice planning tips & much more.

Program date: Saturday Jan. 9th, 2010  9am-11:00am

ONLY COACHES THAT ATTEND A SESSION WILL BE VIEWED AS CANDIDATES TO COACH AT WAKEMAN.
