In August 2005, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club and McKinley Elementary School began a partnership to provide after-school and educational enhancement programs for McKinley students. The Wakeman Outreach aims to meet the varied needs of McKinley’s diverse student population through improvement of students’ social skills, general wellness/fitness and performance in the classroom. The Outreach also helps open the door to future participation in Open Gym, after-school programs and leagues offered by Wakeman, particularly at the Stratfield Unit Clubhouse at the First Presbyterian Church.

This past year’s program included Preparing for Team Sports, Field Games, Multi Sport, Chess Club & Board Game Club. McKinley School also provided bus transportation from school to the Wakeman Stratfield Unit throughout the school year.

In addition, the Wakeman Mentoring Program paired forty 2nd - 5th graders with students from local high schools. High school students spend ninety minutes with their student in the classroom and after school one day each week throughout the school year. Through after-school mentoring, McKinley students gain a consistent role model and tutor to help compliment their learning in the classroom.
